HowTo Schema Generator

This HowTo schema generator writes HowTo JSON-LD for step-by-step guides: a title, description, image, total time, estimated cost, the supplies used up, the tools needed and each step with optional names, images and anchor links. Name a section on a group of steps, such as Preparation, and they become a HowToSection. Paste a numbered list and the tool splits it into steps. Be clear about what it earns you: Google stopped showing HowTo rich results in 2023, so this markup will not change your Google listing. It is still valid Schema.org, and other search engines and AI assistants can read clear step data. DIY bloggers and support teams use it to describe tutorials, and can paste existing HowTo markup to clean it up.

Rich result status: Google stopped showing HowTo rich results in 2023. HowTo is still valid Schema.org that other search engines and AI tools can read, so this page makes clean markup without promising a Google feature.
Import existing JSON-LD(paste code or read it from a URL)

Paste a HowTo JSON-LD block, several script tags or a whole page's HTML. The form fills with what it finds so you can edit and improve it.

How to use

01

Describe the guide

Enter the title, description, page URL, image, total time in minutes and estimated cost, or press Load example to see a filled form. Paste existing HowTo JSON-LD to load it instead.

02

List supplies, tools and steps

Add supplies and tools one per row. Add each step with its instruction and, if you like, a section name, short name, image and anchor URL, or paste all steps at once.

03

Copy and validate

Choose JSON-LD or Microdata, press Copy script and check it with Validate at validator.schema.org. The Google test link is hidden because Google no longer reports on HowTo.

Why HowTo Schema Generator

HowTo, Recipe or ItemList: which to use

Step-by-step content can be described three ways. The choice depends on what the page teaches and which search features still exist for it.

Good practice for HowTo markup

Keep the markup a faithful copy of the visible guide.

  • Every step in the markup should appear on the page, in the same order.
  • Put only the instruction in the step text, without Step 1 labels.
  • List real supplies and tools; do not pad the lists with keywords.
  • If the guide is mainly a video, add VideoObject markup with key moments as well.

Common questions

Does HowTo schema still show rich results in Google?
No. Google reduced HowTo rich results to desktop in 2023 and then stopped showing them. The markup is still valid Schema.org, and Google has said unused structured data does no harm, but it will not add steps to your search listing.
Is HowTo markup worth adding to a tutorial page?
It can be when the steps are already on the page. Other search engines and AI assistants read structured data, and clean step markup makes a guide easier to quote accurately. Do not build a page around the markup, since it will not change your Google listing.
What is the difference between supply and tool in HowTo schema?
A HowToSupply is used up or becomes part of the result, such as screws, paint or a replacement part. A HowToTool is needed but not used up, such as a screwdriver or a drill. Each row in the form becomes one of these.
How do I group HowTo steps into sections?
Type the same section name on each step that belongs together, such as Preparation or Assembly. Consecutive steps with the same name become a HowToSection holding those steps. Steps with no section name stay as plain HowToStep items.
How does the HowTo schema generator write total time and cost?
Enter minutes and the tool writes an ISO 8601 duration, so 90 becomes PT1H30M. The estimated cost is written as a MonetaryAmount with the value and a three-letter currency code such as USD.
Can I paste steps from my article into the HowTo form?
Yes. Paste them into the box under the steps, one per line, and press Add pasted steps. Numbers, bullets and labels such as Step 3: at the start of a line are removed, since the step order already numbers them.
Should I use HowTo or Recipe schema for a cooking guide?
Recipe. Google still shows recipe rich results, and Recipe has fields for ingredients, times, yield and nutrition. Use the Recipe Schema Generator for dishes and keep HowTo for non-food tasks such as repairs, crafts or software guides.
Can HowTo steps link to parts of my page?
Yes. Put an anchor URL such as example.com/guide#step-3 in a step's anchor field, and add a matching id to that step on the page. Each step can also carry its own image URL.
