Recipe Schema Generator

This recipe schema generator builds Recipe JSON-LD that follows Google's recipe documentation. Fill the name, images of the finished dish, author, prep and cook times in minutes, servings, ingredients one per line and the method step by step. Times become ISO 8601 durations and total time is added up for you. Group steps into sections such as For the sauce, add nutrition per serving, diet labels, a recipe video and an average rating with reviews. Food bloggers use it when a recipe plugin leaves out fields, and you can paste the plugin's existing JSON-LD to load and fix it. A Validation panel flags missing images, times in the wrong format and calories with no yield before you copy the code.

Why Recipe Schema Generator

Recipe properties Google uses

Google shows recipes as rich results and in carousels. Two properties are required and the rest are recommended. The more you fill honestly, the more Google can show, such as cook time, calories and rating.

Recipe carousels and list pages

A category page that lists many recipes can join a host carousel when it carries an ItemList of the recipe URLs, and each recipe page carries its own Recipe block. Build the list with the ItemList Schema Generator and the Recipe type, and build each recipe here.

Keep the markup in step with the page. Ingredients, times and steps in the JSON-LD should match what readers see, and a recipe page should describe one dish, not a roundup.

Common questions

Which Recipe schema properties does Google require?
Only name and image. Google recommends author, datePublished, description, prepTime and cookTime or totalTime, recipeYield, recipeIngredient, recipeInstructions, recipeCategory, recipeCuisine, keywords, nutrition, aggregateRating and video. The Validation panel shows the required two as errors and the rest as warnings.
How does the recipe schema generator write cooking times?
You enter minutes and the tool converts them to ISO 8601 durations, so 90 minutes becomes PT1H30M. Leave total time empty and it adds prep and cook time together. Google asks for prepTime and cookTime together, or totalTime on its own.
How many images should Recipe markup have?
At least one image of the finished dish, which Google requires. Google recommends several crops in 16x9, 4x3 and 1x1 ratios, each at least 50,000 pixels when width is multiplied by height. Add one URL per row; two or more are written as an array.
How do I split recipe instructions into sections?
Type a section name, such as For the dough, on each step that belongs to it. Consecutive steps with the same section name are grouped into a HowToSection with that name. Steps without a section stay as plain HowToStep items.
Why does the recipe generator warn about calories and yield?
Google reads nutrition.calories as the energy per serving, so it needs recipeYield to know how many servings there are. If you enter calories without servings or a yield text, the tool warns you. Enter plain numbers and it adds calories, g or mg for you.
Can I add a video to Recipe JSON-LD?
Yes. Fill the Recipe video card with an embed or file URL, a thumbnail, upload date and length. The tool writes a VideoObject inside the recipe and falls back to the recipe name, description and first image for any empty field.
Can I mark up my own star rating on a recipe?
Only if the ratings come from readers and are visible on the page. Enter the average and the count, or add individual reviews and press Use the reviews above to average them. Google does not allow ratings copied from other sites.
Does the recipe schema generator support diet labels?
Yes. Tick any of eleven Schema.org diets, such as Vegan, Gluten free or Low salt, and they are written as suitableForDiet values. Only claim a diet the recipe really meets.
What should recipe step text contain?
Only the instruction itself. Google asks you not to include labels such as Step 1 or the step name in the text. The tool warns when a step starts with Step and a number, and the paste box strips numbers and bullets for you.
