Review Schema Generator

This review schema generator writes Review and AggregateRating JSON-LD for Google's review snippet, the stars under a search result. Mark up one review, an average rating from many users, or both on the item. Pick what is reviewed from 18 supported types, such as Product, Book, Movie, Course, Recipe, Software app or Restaurant, and the form shows the fields that type needs. Reviews can carry a title, date, publisher, a rating on any scale, and pros and cons for product reviews. Choose a standalone Review with itemReviewed or nest it inside the item. Review sites and bloggers use it for product and book reviews. The page also explains when Google ignores stars, such as reviews a business hosts about itself.

Why Review Schema Generator

Four valid review patterns

Google accepts reviews and ratings in four shapes. This generator writes all of them from the same fields, so pick the one that matches what the page is about.

PatternUse it whenSettings here
Review with itemReviewedThe page is a review articleOne review, Review with itemReviewed
Item with nested reviewThe page is about the item and shows one reviewOne review, Item with a nested review

When review stars will not appear

Valid markup makes a page eligible, but Google may still skip the stars. The most common reasons are these.

  • The reviews are about the business that publishes them (self-serving), on a LocalBusiness or Organization page.
  • The reviews or rating are not visible on the page, or the markup and the page disagree.
  • The rating is copied from another site rather than collected by you.
  • The item type is not one Google supports for review snippets.
  • The reviewer name is a label such as 50% off or Admin instead of a real person or organization.

Common questions

Which item types can a review snippet cover?
Google supports reviews and ratings for Book, Course, CreativeWorkSeason, CreativeWorkSeries, Episode, Event, Game, HowTo, LocalBusiness, MediaObject, Movie, MusicPlaylist, MusicRecording, Organization, Product, Recipe and SoftwareApplication. The item type menu covers these, with Restaurant as a LocalBusiness subtype.
What does a Review need for Google's review snippet?
An author with a real name under 100 characters, a reviewRating with a ratingValue, and the item being reviewed with a name. Google recommends datePublished and the bestRating and worstRating of your scale. The Validation panel checks each of these.
What is the difference between Review and AggregateRating markup?
A Review is one person's or publication's opinion with its own rating. An AggregateRating is the average of many ratings and needs a ratingCount or reviewCount. A product page can carry both: the average from all buyers and one featured review.
Should I nest the review or use itemReviewed?
Both are valid. Nest the review or rating inside the item when the page is about the item, such as a product page. Use a standalone Review with itemReviewed when the page is the review, such as a review article about someone else's product.
Why won't Google show stars for reviews of my own business?
Google treats them as self-serving. When a LocalBusiness or Organization publishes reviews about itself on its own site, directly or through an embedded widget, those pages are not eligible for review stars. The markup is still valid, and the tool shows a note when you pick those types.
How do I add pros and cons to a product review?
Type each advantage on its own line under Pros and each drawback under Cons. The tool writes them as positiveNotes and negativeNotes, each an ItemList of ListItem names. Google shows pros and cons for editorial product reviews, so the tool warns if you add them to another item type.
Can I use a rating scale other than 1 to 5?
Yes. Set the scale for the review or the average, such as 1 to 10 or 0 to 100. The values are written as worstRating and bestRating, and the Validation panel flags a rating outside that range. If you leave the defaults, Google assumes 1 to 5.
Can I copy ratings from another review site into my markup?
No. Google's guidelines say aggregate ratings must come from reviews collected on your own site or directly from your users, and the reviews must be visible on the page. Ratings pulled from other platforms are not allowed.
Can the review schema generator load markup I already have?
Yes. Paste a Review, an AggregateRating or an item that carries review or aggregateRating into Import existing JSON-LD, or read it from a URL. The tool detects the pattern and fills the item, review and rating fields.
