XML Sitemap Validator

This XML sitemap validator checks a sitemap.xml against the sitemaps.org protocol and Google's rules, and tells you exactly what to fix. Enter a sitemap URL, or just a domain and the tool finds the sitemap through robots.txt. It checks that the XML is well formed, the root element and namespace are right, every loc is a full URL on the same host, and lastmod, changefreq and priority hold valid values. It also flags duplicates, the 50,000 URL and 50 MB limits, image and hreflang entries with missing namespaces, and sitemap indexes, following up to 25 child sitemaps. A second check tests the listed URLs and reports any that redirect or return errors, which is the usual reason Search Console shows fewer indexed pages than submitted.

A domain finds the sitemap through robots.txt and common paths. Sitemap indexes are followed to their first 25 child sitemaps.

How to use

01

Enter a sitemap or paste XML

Type a sitemap URL, or a domain to find its sitemap, and press Validate. For a file behind a firewall or not yet live, choose Paste XML and paste the whole file.

02

Read the errors and warnings

Errors break the file or an entry and should be fixed first. Warnings, such as duplicate URLs or future lastmod dates, weaken it. Filter by level, and see which child sitemap each issue came from.

03

Check the listed URLs

Press Check URLs to test up to 500 listed URLs. Any that redirect, return 404 or fail are listed. Replace them with final URLs, then download the CSV as a fix list.

Why XML Sitemap Validator

Common sitemap errors and how to fix them

Most broken sitemaps fail for one of a handful of reasons, and most come from a plugin or a hand edit. Fix errors first, since one parse error can make search engines skip the whole file.

What a healthy sitemap looks like

A healthy sitemap lists only canonical URLs that return 200, carry no noindex tag and are on the same host as the file. Each has a lastmod that changes only when the page really changes. It stays under 50,000 URLs and 50 MB, or is split with a sitemap index, and it is listed in robots.txt and submitted in Search Console.

If the validator shows no errors and the URL check shows no redirects, compare the number of URLs with the indexed count in Search Console. A large gap then points to content or duplicate problems, not to the sitemap.

Common questions

What does the XML sitemap validator check?
Well-formed XML, a urlset or sitemapindex root with the sitemaps.org namespace, and a full http or https URL in every loc. It also checks lastmod dates, changefreq words and priority values, duplicates, URLs on another host, the 50,000 URL and 50 MB limits, and image and hreflang entries with their namespaces.
Why does Search Console say my sitemap could not be read?
Usually the XML is broken or the URL returns something else. An unescaped & inside a URL, text before the XML declaration, or a sitemap URL that redirects to an HTML page all stop parsers. Validate the same URL here and the first error tells you which one it is.
Can the sitemap validator check a sitemap index?
Yes. When the file is a sitemapindex, the tool validates it and then fetches and checks up to 25 of the child sitemaps it lists. Each child shows its URL count and error count, and issues in the list say which file they came from.
What lastmod format does a valid sitemap need?
The W3C datetime format: a date such as 2026-09-29, or a date and time with a time zone such as 2026-09-29T10:30:00+00:00. Formats like 29/09/2026 or September 29 are errors. The validator also warns about dates in the future and files where every URL has the same date.
Should my sitemap list URLs that redirect?
No. A sitemap should hold only final URLs that return 200 and that you want indexed. Press Check URLs and the validator lists every URL that redirects, with the address it ends on, so you can swap in the final URL.
Can I validate a sitemap that is not online yet?
Yes. Choose Paste XML, paste the file and press Validate. Everything except the same-host check and the URL status check works the same way, and nothing leaves your browser.
Does the validator read gzipped .xml.gz sitemaps?
No. The compressed file cannot be read here. Enter the uncompressed sitemap URL instead, or unzip the file on your computer and paste the XML.
Can a sitemap list URLs from another domain?
Only in special cases. Google accepts cross-host URLs when both sites are verified in the same Search Console account or the other host allows it through robots.txt. The validator flags every URL whose host differs from the sitemap's so you can check they are meant to be there.
Is a valid sitemap enough to get my pages indexed?
No. A clean sitemap helps Google find and recrawl pages, but it does not force indexing. Quality, duplicates, internal links and noindex tags still decide. Use URL Inspection in Search Console for the reason a page is left out.
