Add Line Breaks

Paste a long paragraph or a one-line list and this tool will add line breaks where you want them. Wrap lines at a set width, such as 60 or 80 characters, without splitting words, which is handy for plain-text emails, commit messages and code comments. Or put every sentence on its own line, start a new line after each comma or any text you choose, break before a word, or split text every few words. A last mode turns single line breaks into paragraph breaks, so pasted text gets blank lines between paragraphs. You can add a blank line between parts and trim spaces at the ends of lines. The counter shows how many line breaks were added and the longest line. Everything runs in your browser.

Why Add Line Breaks

What each mode does

Each row shows the input a, b, c. Done! Next step. with that mode and the default options.

ModeResult (a slash marks a line break)
Wrap lines at width 10a, b, c. / Done! Next / step.
New line after each sentencea, b, c. / Done! / Next step.
New line after a commaa, / b, / c. Done! Next step.
New line every 2 wordsa, b, / c. Done! / Next step.

Adding line breaks in other programs

Most editors can do part of this job.

  • Word and Google Docs: Shift+Enter adds a line break inside a paragraph, and Enter starts a new paragraph.
  • VS Code: View, Word Wrap only changes how text is shown, while a find and replace of ,\s with ,\n in regex mode adds real breaks after commas.
  • Command line: fold -s -w 72 file.txt wraps at 72 characters on spaces, and fmt -w 72 does the same while joining short lines.

Common questions

How do I wrap text at 80 characters per line?
Choose Wrap lines at a set width and click 80, or type any width in Max characters per line. Words are moved to the next line instead of being cut, so no line goes over the limit unless a single word is longer than it. Tick Cut words longer than the width to split those too.
How do I put each sentence on a new line?
Choose New line after each sentence. A break is added after a period, question mark, exclamation mark or ellipsis that is followed by a space, including when a closing quote or bracket comes first. Abbreviations such as e.g. followed by a space also count as a sentence end, so check those.
How do I add a line break after every comma?
Choose New line after a character or text and type a comma. Each comma ends a line and the space after it is dropped, turning a, b, c into a column. Untick Keep the character or text to remove the commas as well.
What does adding a line break before a word do?
New line before a character or text starts a new line in front of every place the text appears. Typing Step, for example, turns Step 1 do this Step 2 do that into two lines. It is useful for text where each item begins with the same label.
How do I split text into lines of a few words each?
Choose New line every few words and set Words per line. The text is split on spaces, so punctuation stays attached to its word. It is handy for subtitles, short social captions or practice sheets.
How do I turn single line breaks into paragraph breaks?
Choose Turn line breaks into paragraph breaks. Every line break becomes a blank line, and existing blank lines are not doubled. Markdown, WordPress and many forms need a blank line to start a new paragraph, so this fixes pasted text that shows as one block.
Is adding line breaks the same as word wrap in an editor?
Not quite. Word wrap in an editor only changes how text is shown on screen. This tool inserts real line break characters, so the text keeps its shape when you paste it into an email, a terminal or a file.
What width should I wrap plain-text emails and commit messages at?
Plain-text email is often wrapped at 72 to 78 characters, and git commit message bodies are commonly wrapped at 72. Code comments usually follow the project's line length, often 80 or 100. The width presets cover these.
