Splitting Two-Page Scans Into Single PDF Pages

Scan an open book flat on the glass and each image holds two pages. Copy two A4 pages onto one A3 sheet and the PDF shows them side by side. Either way the file reads badly on a phone, prints awkwardly and cannot be searched page by page. Split PDF Pages in Half turns each of those spreads into two separate pages in reading order. This guide covers when a page should be cut, how to choose the direction and position, a worked book scan, and what actually happens inside the file.

Where two-page spreads come from

Flatbeds, copiers and imposition.

The most common source is a book scanned open on a flatbed, since it is quicker to scan two pages at a time than to turn the book for every page. Copiers produce the same shape when set to put two originals on one sheet, and print shops do it deliberately when they lay out booklets on A3.

The result is a PDF where every page is wide and holds two pages of content. That is fine for printing on the same paper again, but on a screen each half is half the size it should be, and page numbers in the file no longer match the page numbers in the book. Search results and bookmarks then point at the wrong spread.

Choosing the cut direction and position

Down the middle or across.

Automatic mode looks at each page as it is displayed. A page wider than tall is a spread, so it is cut down the middle into a left and a right page. A page taller than wide is treated as two pages stacked, so it is cut across. That handles most scans, including files where a single-page cover sits among the spreads.

Choose Left | right or Top / bottom yourself when the shape misleads. The cut position slider moves the line between 10% and 90% of the page. Book scans are rarely centred perfectly, so line the dashed line on the thumbnails up with the gutter before you split. The same position applies to every page you split.

Covers, ranges and reading order

Not every page is a spread.

Front and back covers are usually single pages. Tick Keep the first page whole and Keep the last page whole and they pass through unchanged. For anything else that should stay whole, such as a fold-out map in the middle, type the pages to split in the range box and the rest are copied as they are.

Reading order matters for right-to-left books. Arabic, Hebrew and Japanese books, including manga, read the right page first. Tick Right half first and each spread becomes the right half followed by the left half. Top and bottom cuts always keep the top half first.

A worked split: a 60 page book scan

30 spreads, 61 pages out.

The file is field-guide.pdf, 31 pages: a single-page front cover and 30 landscape spreads. Upload it and leave the direction on Automatic. The thumbnails show a dashed line down the middle of every spread, but the gutter sits slightly left of centre on this scan, so move the slider to 48%. Tick Keep the first page whole.

The header now reads 30 to split and 61 pages out. Click Split pages & download and field-guide-split-halves.pdf opens with the cover followed by 60 single pages, each one readable at full width on a phone. If the pages still carry a scanner border, run the file through Crop PDF next.

What happens inside the file

Two views of the same page.

Each split page is copied twice, and each copy gets a crop box covering one half. PDF viewers and printers show only the crop box, so each copy looks and prints like a single page. Nothing is resampled or recompressed, which keeps text selectable and scans at full resolution.

There are two side effects. The file roughly doubles in size for the pages you split, since each copy still carries the whole page, and Compress PDF can reduce that afterwards. And the hidden half is still in each copy, so a crop is not a way to hide private content from someone with a PDF editor.

Mistakes to avoid when cutting spreads

Check three thumbnails first.

These are the errors that most often need a second run:

  • Cutting the cover in half because the first page happened to be landscape. Tick the cover options or use the page range.
  • Trusting 50% on a scan where the book was placed off-centre. Check the dashed line on early, middle and late pages.
  • Choosing Top / bottom for a rotated spread. The direction follows the page as displayed, so fix sideways pages with Rotate PDF first.
  • Expecting the file to shrink. Splitting duplicates pages, so plan to compress afterwards if the file has to be emailed.
