Split PDF Pages in Half

Split PDF pages in half when one page holds two: an open book scanned flat, an A3 sheet with two A4 pages, or a 2-up printout. Each chosen page becomes two pages, cut down the middle into left and right halves or across into top and bottom halves. Automatic mode cuts wide pages vertically and tall pages horizontally. Move the cut position if the fold is off centre, keep the front and back covers whole, split only a page range, and put the right half first for right-to-left books and manga. A dashed line on every thumbnail shows where the cut falls. Pages are not re-rendered, so text and images keep their quality, and the file is processed in your browser without an upload.

Choose Automatic, Left | right or Top / bottom, drag the cut position slider if the fold is off centre, and tick the cover or right-to-left options if they apply.

03

Split and download

Check the page count in the header, which shows how many pages the new file will have, then click Split pages & download to save yourfile-split-halves.pdf.

Why Split PDF Pages in Half

Which cut direction to choose

Automatic looks at each page's shape as it is displayed. Wider than tall means a spread, so it cuts down the middle. Taller than wide means two pages stacked, so it cuts across. That handles most scans, including files that mix spreads with single pages of different shapes.

Choose a direction yourself when the shape misleads, for example a square scan or a landscape page that really holds one wide table you do not want cut. Pages you do not want cut at all can be left out with the page list or the cover options.

What happens inside the file

Each page you split is copied twice, and each copy gets a crop box covering one half. Viewers and printers show only the crop box, so each copy looks like a single page. Nothing is cut away, which keeps text selectable and images at full resolution.

Because both copies keep the whole page, the file size roughly doubles for the split pages. Do not rely on the hidden half to keep content private, since a PDF editor can reset the crop box. To tidy leftover borders after splitting, run the file through Crop PDF.

Common questions

How do I split a scanned book page into two pages?
Upload the scan, keep the direction on Automatic or choose Left | right, and click Split pages & download. Every two-page spread becomes a left page and a right page, in reading order, in one new PDF.
Can I cut an A3 PDF into two A4 pages?
Yes. An A3 landscape page split down the middle gives two A4 portrait halves, and an A3 portrait page cut across gives two A4 landscape halves. Automatic picks the cut from the page shape, or you can choose the direction yourself.
What if the fold in my scan is not in the middle?
Move the cut position slider between 10% and 90%. The dashed line on every thumbnail moves with it, so you can line it up with the gutter before you split. The same position is used for every page you split.
How do I keep the cover page whole when splitting pages in half?
Tick Keep the first page whole and, if the back cover is also a single page, Keep the last page whole. Those pages are copied unchanged while the spreads between them are split.
Which half comes first for right-to-left books or manga?
Tick Right half first. Each spread then becomes the right half followed by the left half, which matches the reading order of Arabic, Hebrew and Japanese books. Top and bottom cuts always keep the top half first.
Does splitting pages in half lower the scan quality?
No. Each half is a copy of the original page with a smaller crop box, so nothing is resampled. The hidden half is still stored in each copy, which is why the file roughly doubles in size. Compress PDF can shrink it afterwards.
Can I split only some pages in half?
Yes. Type a list in Pages to split, such as 2-15. Pages outside the list are kept whole and stay in their place, and the thumbnails show them faded with a whole label.
How is splitting pages in half different from Split PDF?
Split PDF divides a document into several files by page ranges, so each page stays intact. This tool cuts each page itself into two pages inside one file. Use Split PDF to break up a long document, and this tool to undo two-up scans.
