Split PDF

Split PDF files into smaller documents in the way that suits the job. Type custom ranges like 1-3, 5, 7-10, cut the file into fixed parts of N pages, extract every page as its own PDF, or click the scissors between thumbnails to set split points. You can also split by file size for email limits, separate odd and even pages, or start a new file at each bookmark. Ranges can be merged into one PDF instead. Several parts arrive in one ZIP, named by their pages. An accountant might split a statement pack into monthly files, and a teacher might break a workbook into worksheets. A list of the files you are about to create appears before you click. The PDF is never uploaded.

How to use

Upload the PDF

Drop one PDF of up to 100 MB on the upload area. The tool shows its page count and a preview of every page, so you can find the points where you want to split.

Pick a split mode

Choose Custom ranges, Fixed ranges, Extract pages, Click to split, By file size, Odd and even, or By bookmarks, then fill in its setting. A line lists the files that will be created.

Download the parts

Click Split & download. Several parts come in a ZIP, numbered in order and named by their pages, for example 01-report-pages-1-3.pdf. A single part downloads as a plain PDF.

Why Split PDF

Split range examples

The Ranges box reads each comma-separated part as one output file. The examples below assume a 12 page PDF. A range written backwards, like 10-8, is read from the lower number to the higher one. Numbers outside the document stop the split with an error message, so fix the range and the list of files updates straight away.

Fixed ranges works differently. It ignores the Ranges box and cuts the file from page 1 onwards into parts of the size you choose, with any leftover pages in the last part.

The seven split modes at a glance

Each mode answers a different question about where the cuts go. Output names start with a part number, then your prefix, then the pages or the bookmark title.

Common questions

How do I split a PDF into separate pages?
Choose Extract pages and keep Extract all pages selected. Each page becomes its own PDF inside the ZIP, named with its page number. To save only a few pages as separate files, pick Select pages and type them, for example 2, 5-7.
How do I split a PDF into two files?
Pick Custom ranges and type two ranges, for example 1-10, 11- for a 30 page file. The 11- part runs to the last page, so you do not need to know the exact count. Or choose Click to split and press the scissors under page 10. You get a ZIP with two PDFs.
Can I split a PDF every 2 pages?
Yes. Choose Fixed ranges and enter 2. A 9 page file gives five PDFs: pages 1-2, 3-4, 5-6, 7-8 and page 9 on its own, because the last part holds whatever is left.
How do page ranges work when splitting a PDF?
Separate each part with a comma. 1-3 is a run of pages, 5 is a single page, and 8- means page 8 to the end. A page number past the end of the file shows an error instead of being skipped, so a part never goes missing without warning.
Can one page appear in two of the split files?
Yes, ranges are independent, so 1-10 and 5-15 both include pages 5 to 10 and each output gets its own copy. That is handy when a summary page belongs in every section. Nothing is removed from the source, so overlap costs you nothing.
How do I split a large PDF for email?
Choose By file size and enter your limit, such as 10 MB. The tool test-saves groups of pages and packs as many as fit under the limit into each part. A single page that is bigger than the limit on its own is saved alone and flagged, so you can run that part through Compress PDF.
Does splitting a PDF reduce quality?
No. Each output file receives exact copies of the original pages, with no re-rendering or recompression. Text stays selectable and images keep their original resolution.
Is the splitting done on my computer or on a server?
On your computer. The document is read with pdf-lib inside the browser tab and the ZIP is built there too, so a confidential file never leaves your machine. Closing the tab discards everything except the ZIP you downloaded.
Will internal links survive after a PDF is split apart?
Links that point to pages inside the same output file generally keep working, but links aimed at pages that landed in a different part have nowhere to go. Bookmark outlines are not copied into the parts, even when you split by bookmarks. Treat each part as a standalone document.
Can I merge the split ranges back into one PDF?
Yes. Under Custom ranges, tick Merge all ranges into one PDF and the ranges are joined in the order you typed them, so 7-9, 1-2 gives one 5 page file starting with page 7. The same box exists in Extract pages mode. A single output file downloads as a PDF, while several parts come in one ZIP.
