UPI QR Codes Explained: Make One That Pays Right

Walk into almost any shop in India and a small printed square does the job a card machine used to do. A UPI QR code holds nothing more than a short payment link, yet it saves queues, change and mistyped UPI IDs every day. This guide explains what sits inside that link, how the UPI QR Code Generator builds it, when a fixed amount helps or hurts, and how to print a standee that keeps paying the right account for years.

QR

Why a printed UPI code beats reading out your ID

The counter problem.

Before QR codes, paying by UPI meant the customer typing your ID letter by letter, often while a queue grew behind them. One wrong character sent the request to nobody, or worse, to someone else. A code removes the typing. The customer opens any UPI app, scans, sees your name, enters the amount and a PIN, and the money lands in your bank account.

The code itself is static. It never expires, needs no app of its own and works with BHIM, Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm and bank apps alike, because they all read the same link format.

What the upi://pay link inside the code holds

The QR code stores one line of text that starts with upi://pay. After the question mark come short named parts. pa is the payee address, your UPI ID. pn is the payee name. am is an amount, cu the currency, always INR, and tn a note the payer sees. Merchants sometimes add tr, their own reference number, and mc, a four digit merchant category code from the bank.

A worked example: UPI ID asha.stores@okaxis, name Asha Stores, no amount and the note Order 1042 give upi://pay?pa=asha.stores@okaxis&pn=Asha%20Stores&cu=INR&tn=Order%201042. The %20 is a space written the way links need it. The generator shows this link above the preview, so you can also paste it into a WhatsApp message or an invoice.

Fixed amount or open amount

Leave the amount empty for a shop counter. Each customer's total is different, and an open code lets them type it, so one printed card serves every sale.

Fill in the amount when every payer owes the same sum: an event ticket, a class fee, a parking charge, a single product at a stall. Most UPI apps then show that amount straight away, and some do not let the payer change it, which cuts down on underpayments. Make one code per price rather than one code for everything.

Printing a UPI standee that lasts

The generator's Print standee button lays out a counter card, an A6 standee, an A5 table stand or an A4 poster with your heading, the code, your name and your UPI ID, plus the amount and note if you set them. Showing the ID in text matters, because some older phones struggle to focus and the customer can type it instead.

  • Print at least 7 cm wide on a counter and 14 cm or more on a wall.
  • Keep dark modules on a light background; the design panel warns when colours are too close.
  • Use the Scan to pay frame or your own call to action, so nobody wonders what the square is for.
  • Laminate the card, since a scuffed code slows every payment.
  • Test with two or three different UPI apps before you put it out.

UPI QR mistakes that cost money

Most problems with UPI codes come from a handful of avoidable slips:

  • A typo in the UPI ID. The code scans perfectly and the payment fails or goes astray, so scan your own code and check the name before printing.
  • A payee name that does not match the bank account. UPI apps show the bank's registered name, and a mismatch makes customers hesitate or refuse.
  • Leaving an old code on display after changing banks or UPI IDs.
  • Not checking the counter. The classic scam is a sticker with another code pasted over yours, so look at your standee every morning.
  • Believing a request that asks you to scan and enter your PIN to receive money. Receiving never needs a PIN.

A self-made UPI code or the one your bank issues

Banks and payment apps also hand business accounts their own printed QR, sometimes with a small speaker that announces each payment aloud and a dashboard that lists settlements. Those codes use the same upi://pay idea, with merchant fields filled in by the provider. If you already have one and the speaker matters to you, keep using it.

A code made here suits individuals, freelancers, tutors, market stalls, events and anyone who wants their own design, a fixed amount per product, or a note such as an order number. If your bank has given you a merchant category code or asks for a reference number format, open the merchant fields and fill them in. Either way, the money moves directly between the customer's bank and yours; the printed square only saves typing.

UPI QR Code Generator beside the other QR tools

The UPI tool exists because the link format is strict and a standee needs your name and ID laid out clearly. The QR Code Generator also has a UPI type for a quick code with full design control, the Bulk QR Code Generator can make UPI codes for many staff or stalls from a spreadsheet, and the WhatsApp QR Code Generator pairs well at the same counter for order enquiries. None of them sees or handles money; payments always run between the customer's app and the banks.
