Mute Video

Mute video files in your browser by removing the sound track, silencing just one section, or turning the volume up or down. Removing the sound copies the picture without re-encoding, so it takes seconds and keeps the original quality. Mute a section to hide a swear word, a private conversation or background music in part of a clip, using sliders and current-frame buttons to mark it. Change volume lowers loud clips or boosts quiet ones up to 300 percent. Drop several videos to remove the audio from all of them and download a ZIP, or save the sound of a single video as an MP3. It suits social posts, presentations, stock footage and silent website backgrounds. Nothing is uploaded.

How to use

01

Add your videos

Drag one or more videos onto the upload area. MP4, MOV, WebM, MKV and AVI work, and the files stay on your device.

02

Choose what to do with the sound

Pick Remove all sound, Mute a section (one video) with the start and end marked, or Change volume and set the percentage.

03

Process and download

Click Mute video or Apply. The first run downloads the FFmpeg engine. Preview the result and download it, or download all as a ZIP.

Why Mute Video

Remove, silence a section or change the volume

The three modes solve different problems. Removing the sound deletes the audio track completely, which also makes the file a little smaller. Muting a section keeps the audio track but sets the volume to zero between two points, so the rest of the clip still has sound. Changing the volume scales the whole track up or down.

ModeWhat happensTypical use
Remove all soundAudio track deleted, picture copied as isSilent loops, stock footage, website backgrounds
Mute a sectionVolume set to zero between two timesHiding a word, a name or a few seconds of music
Change volumeWhole track made quieter or louderBalancing clips before editing or sharing

Muted video for websites and social media

Browsers only autoplay video without a user click when it is muted, so hero videos and product loops on websites should have no sound track at all. Removing the track rather than just muting the player also saves a little bandwidth.

On social platforms, copyrighted music is a common reason for posts being blocked or muted after upload. Removing or silencing the music section before you post avoids that, and you can add licensed music inside the platform's editor instead.

Common questions

How do I remove the audio from a video?
Drop the video in, keep Remove all sound selected and click Mute video. The picture is copied as it is, so the file is ready in seconds and looks exactly like the original, just silent.
Can I mute only part of a video?
Yes. With one video loaded, choose Mute a section, then set the start and end of the part to silence with the sliders or the current-frame buttons. The rest of the sound stays, and the video picture is not re-encoded for MP4, MOV, MKV and WebM files.
How do I make a video quieter or louder?
Choose Change volume and move the slider: 50 percent halves the loudness, 200 percent doubles it. Very high values can distort loud parts, so preview the result before you share it.
Can I remove sound from many videos at once?
Yes. Drop several videos together. Remove all sound and Change volume are applied to each one in turn, each gets a Save link, and Download all gives you a ZIP. Muting a section works one video at a time.
Does muting a video reduce its quality?
No. For MP4, MOV, MKV and WebM files the video stream is copied without re-encoding. Only formats such as AVI are converted to MP4, which re-encodes the picture at a high quality setting.
Can I extract the audio from a video as an MP3?
Yes. With one video loaded, click Save the sound as MP3. The audio track is converted to a high-quality MP3 and downloaded, and the video itself is not changed.
Why would I remove the sound from a video?
Common reasons are copyrighted background music that gets a post blocked, private conversations in the background, wind noise, and silent autoplay loops on websites, where browsers only autoplay muted video anyway.
Is my video uploaded when I mute it?
No. Everything runs in your browser with FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly. Only the engine is downloaded, once, and your videos stay on your device.
