Trim Video

Trim video files in your browser, with no upload and no watermark. Drop in an MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV clip, play it, and set the start and end with sliders, exact seconds or the Start at current frame and End at current frame buttons. Then choose Keep it to cut away everything outside your selection, or Remove it to cut a section out of the middle and join the rest. Fast mode copies the video and audio streams without re-encoding, so it is quick and keeps the original quality, cutting at the nearest keyframe. Exact mode re-encodes for frame-accurate cuts. It suits trimming dead air from a recording, shortening a clip before sharing, or removing a mistake from the middle of a video.

How to use

01

Add your video

Drag a video onto the upload area or click to browse. MP4, MOV, WebM, MKV, AVI and more work, and the file stays on your device.

02

Mark the selection

Play the video and use the sliders, the seconds boxes or the current-frame buttons to set the start and end. Play selection checks it.

03

Choose and trim

Pick Keep it or Remove it, and Fast or Exact mode, then click Trim video. Preview the result and download it.

Why Trim Video

Fast or Exact: which trimming mode to use

Both modes give you a shorter video, but they work differently. Fast mode never touches the picture data. It copies the streams from the nearest keyframe, which is why it takes seconds even for long files and keeps the quality exactly the same. Exact mode decodes the video and encodes it again, so it can start on any frame, at the cost of time.

Trimming tips

Pause the video on the frame you want and click the current-frame button instead of guessing seconds; it is quicker and more precise. Use Play selection to watch just the part you marked before you trim.

If you plan to share the clip on a platform with a size limit, trim first and then run it through the Video Compressor. Compressing a shorter clip is faster and leaves more bitrate for the part you keep.

Common questions

How do I trim the start and end of a video?
Drop the video in, move the Start slider to where the clip should begin and the End slider to where it should stop, then click Trim video with Keep it selected. You can also type exact seconds, or pause the video and click Start at current frame or End at current frame.
How do I cut a part out of the middle of a video?
Select the part you want to remove, choose Remove it, and click Trim video. The section before and after your selection are joined into one file, so a mistake or an awkward pause disappears.
Does trimming a video reduce its quality?
Not in Fast mode, which copies the existing video and audio data without re-encoding, so the quality is identical to the original. Exact mode re-encodes the video at a high quality setting, which is visually very close but not bit-for-bit the same.
Why does Fast mode start my clip a little early?
Compressed video is made of keyframes and the frames in between depend on them. Without re-encoding, a cut can only start at a keyframe, which may be up to a couple of seconds before the point you chose. Switch to Exact mode when the cut must land on a precise frame.
Which video formats can I trim?
MP4, MOV, M4V, MKV, WebM and TS files keep their format in Fast mode. Other formats, such as AVI, are re-encoded to MP4 with Exact mode. WebM files stay WebM in both modes.
Is there a length or size limit for trimming video?
There is no fixed limit, but the whole file has to fit in your browser's memory. Clips of a few hundred megabytes work on most computers; very large 4K recordings may fail, especially in Exact mode.
Can I trim a video on my phone?
Yes, the page works in mobile browsers. Drag the sliders with your finger or type the seconds. Encoding is slower on phones, so Fast mode is the better choice for longer clips.
Is my video uploaded when I trim it?
No. Trimming runs in your browser with FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly. Only the engine is downloaded, once, and the video never leaves your device.
