Drop in your photo

Drag a JPG, PNG, WebP or HEIC photo onto the upload area, paste one with Ctrl+V, or add several photos if you want the same text on all of them.

Write and style your text

Pick a template or edit the text box, then choose a font, size, colour, outline, shadow or background box and drag the text into place. Add text layer creates another one.

Why Add Text to Image

Tips for readable text on photos

Text on images fails in the same few ways: it is too small to read on a phone, it sits on a part of the photo with similar colours, or it is placed where an app will cover it. A few habits fix most of that.

Keep captions short, pick a size of at least 5 to 8 percent of the image width for headlines, and look at the result at phone size before you post. When the background is busy, an outline or a background box does more than changing the colour.

  • Contrast: light text on dark areas, dark text on light areas, or add an outline.
  • Background box: a semi-transparent dark box behind white text works on any photo. Box opacity and padding control how heavy it looks.
  • Safe zones: keep text away from the edges. Social apps overlay buttons, profile names and captions near the bottom and sides.
  • One or two fonts per image. Impact, Anton or Bebas Neue suit memes and titles, Playfair Display or Georgia suit quotes, sans fonts suit labels.
  • Batch jobs: check the first and last photo. Text keeps the same relative position, so a portrait photo in a landscape batch may need its own run.

Fonts for Hindi, Gujarati, Urdu and other scripts

Many photo editors show boxes or broken letters for Indian and Arabic scripts because the font does not contain those characters, or because it cannot join them correctly. The Noto fonts from Google are designed for each script, and the browser shapes the letters properly when it draws them.

Pick the font that matches your language before you judge the result. Urdu looks most natural in Noto Nastaliq Urdu, which is taller than Latin text, so leave extra line height. Mixed English and Hindi works well in Noto Sans Devanagari, which includes Latin letters too.

How do I add text to a photo on my phone?
Open this page in your phone's browser, tap the upload area and choose a photo from your gallery. Edit the text, then drag it with your finger to place it. Tap Add text and Download to save the new image to your phone.
Which fonts can I use to add text to an image?
Ten built-in font styles that use fonts on your device, plus 25 Google Fonts such as Roboto, Montserrat, Poppins, Bebas Neue, Anton, Playfair Display, Lobster, Pacifico and Caveat. For Indian and Arabic scripts, pick Noto Sans Devanagari, Gujarati, Bengali or Tamil, Noto Nastaliq Urdu or Noto Naskh Arabic. Any font can be bold or italic where the family supports it.
Do Google Fonts send my photo anywhere?
No. Only the font files are downloaded from Google the first time you pick a Google Font. The text is drawn onto your photo in your browser, and the photo never leaves your device.
How do I make text readable on a busy photo?
Turn on an outline in a contrasting colour, add a drop shadow with a soft blur, or tick Background box and set its opacity and padding. White text with a thin black outline works on almost any photo. Keeping the text large and short helps more than any effect.
How do I put meme-style top and bottom captions on a photo?
Click the Meme (top and bottom) template. It adds two Impact layers with a black outline near the top and bottom edges. Replace TOP TEXT and BOTTOM TEXT with your own words and adjust the size if a line is long.
Can I add text to many images at once?
Yes. Add more photos with the Add more files link or drop several at the start. The text layers are applied to every photo in the same relative position. Tokens help with batches: {filename} writes each photo's name and {n} writes its number.
How do I move, rotate or reorder text on the image?
Drag the text with your mouse or finger, or nudge the selected layer with the arrow keys (Shift for bigger steps). The Rotation slider turns it from -180 to 180 degrees. The arrow buttons next to each layer bring it forward or send it back when layers overlap.
Will adding text reduce the quality of my photo?
PNG output is lossless. JPG and WebP are saved at the quality you set, 92 by default, which is hard to tell apart from the original. The output keeps the original pixel dimensions, and JPG output can keep the photo's camera EXIF data.
Are my photos uploaded when I add text to them?
No. The text is drawn onto your image with the canvas in your browser, and the file is created on your device. Nothing is sent to a server.
