AVIF to JPG Converter

This AVIF to JPG converter turns AVIF images into JPG files in your browser, so they open in older photo editors, Office, email and upload forms that do not read AVIF yet. AVIF is a newer format that many websites and phone cameras now use because it is very small, but plenty of software still rejects it. Drop in one file or a folder, pick a quality with the presets or the exact slider, and choose the colour that fills any transparent areas. You can switch the output to PNG to keep transparency, or to WebP, GIF, BMP or TIFF. Batches download as one ZIP, and the files are never uploaded.

Bulk supported. Add several files and they are processed in a queue with one ZIP download. The same settings apply to every file, and nothing leaves your device.

How to use

01

Add AVIF files

Drop .avif files onto the upload area, choose a folder, paste an image with Ctrl+V or import one from a URL. One file shows its size and dimensions; several start bulk mode.

02

Set quality and background

JPG is preselected at High (90). Pick Medium or Low, or type an exact value from 1 to 100. Choose the colour for transparent areas, or pick PNG under Output format to keep them.

03

Convert and download

Press Convert to JPG. One file downloads with the same name and a .jpg extension, with a before and after view. Several files download together as converted-jpg.zip.

Why AVIF to JPG Converter

AVIF, WebP and JPG compared

All three are lossy formats for photos. The newer ones compress better, and the older one opens everywhere. That trade-off is why you may want AVIF on a website but JPG when you send a file to someone.

A practical rule: keep AVIF or WebP for images you publish on your own site, and convert to JPG for anything you email, print or upload to a portal.

When AVIF files show up

You usually meet AVIF in two places. Saving a picture from a website can give you an .avif file, because image services send AVIF to browsers that support it. Some phones and cameras can also save photos as AVIF or HEIF to save storage.

Renaming the file to .jpg does not convert it. The data inside is still AVIF, and apps that cannot read AVIF will still refuse it. Convert it here and use the new file.

Common questions

What is an AVIF file and why can't I open it?
AVIF is an image format based on the AV1 video codec. It gives much smaller files than JPG at the same visual quality, so websites and some phones use it. Older versions of Photoshop, Windows Photos, Office and many upload forms do not read it yet, which is why converting to JPG helps.
Which browsers can run the AVIF to JPG converter?
The browser does the decoding, so you need one that can open AVIF: current Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari 16 or newer all can. If a file will not open, the tool shows a message suggesting you update the browser.
Does converting AVIF to JPG lose quality?
A little, because JPG is lossy too. At the High preset the change is very hard to see. The JPG will usually be larger than the AVIF, since JPG compresses less efficiently, and that is expected.
What happens to transparent parts of an AVIF image?
JPG has no transparency, so transparent pixels are filled with the background colour you choose, white by default. To keep them see-through, choose PNG or WebP under Output format before converting.
Can I convert many AVIF images to JPG at once?
Yes. Drop them all in or choose the folder. They are converted one after another, each row shows the old and new size, and Download all saves one ZIP with a JPG for each AVIF.
Is my AVIF photo uploaded to a server for conversion?
No. The browser decodes the AVIF and encodes the JPG inside the page, so the image never leaves your device. That also makes it quick, with no upload or download wait.
Can I keep the camera EXIF data when converting AVIF to JPG?
The AVIF decoder in browsers gives the page pixels only, so camera details from an AVIF file are not carried over. The Keep EXIF switch copies metadata from JPG, PNG and WebP sources, not from AVIF.
Can I shrink the image while converting from AVIF?
Yes. Enter a Max width or Max height and larger images are scaled down with the aspect ratio kept. Lower the quality as well if you need a smaller JPG for email or a form.
