Blur Image

Blur image files online in five ways: the whole photo, only the areas you draw, everything except those areas, or, with an AI cut-out that runs in your browser, just the background or just the person. Draw rectangles or ovals over faces, number plates and text, soften their edges, and pick Gaussian, motion or zoom blur from 1 to 50 pixels while the preview updates. Background (AI) gives a portrait-style blur behind a person or product without drawing anything. People use it to hide bystanders before posting, to blur a face in a photo for privacy, and to add movement to a sports shot. Choose what to blur

Pick Whole image, Selected areas, Everything except areas, Background (AI) or Person or subject (AI). In the area modes, drag rectangles or ovals on the preview.

Why Blur Image

Blur, pixelate or black box: which hides information more safely

All three hide detail, but they differ in how safe and how tidy they are. Choose based on what would happen if someone could read what is underneath. A blurred face in a crowd photo is fine, a blurred bank account number in a screenshot is not.

Getting a natural background blur

Phones fake a shallow depth of field by finding the subject and blurring the rest. Background (AI) does the same after the fact. The result looks most natural with a moderate strength of 8 to 20 pixels and a small soft edge, so the outline of hair and shoulders does not look cut out.

The AI finds one main subject. Group photos, or a person holding a large object, may come out with parts of the scene left sharp. In that case, switch to Everything except areas and draw an oval around what should stay in focus.

Common questions

How do I blur only part of an image?
Choose Selected areas, then drag a rectangle over the part you want to hide. Switch to Oval for round shapes such as faces, and draw more areas for other spots. Only those areas are blurred, and the rest of the photo stays sharp.
How do I blur the background of a photo?
Choose Background (AI). A segmentation model finds the person, pet or product and keeps it sharp while everything behind it is blurred. The model downloads once, about 40 MB, and then runs on your device. Use Soft edge to blend the outline, or draw an area and pick Everything except areas if you prefer a manual shape.
How do I blur a face in a picture?
Pick Selected areas, choose Oval (faces) and drag over each face, then raise the strength until the face cannot be recognised at full size. For privacy, 20 pixels or more is a sensible start on a normal phone photo. Check the result zoomed in before sharing.
What is the difference between Gaussian, motion and zoom blur?
Gaussian blur softens evenly in every direction and is the right choice for hiding details. Motion blur smears the image along one direction, set with the Direction slider, which suggests speed. Zoom blur streaks outward from the centre, like a camera zooming during the shot.
Can blurred text in an image be recovered?
Sometimes. A light blur over short, predictable text such as a number or a known font can be guessed or partly reversed. For passwords, card numbers and similar secrets, use a black box instead, for example the Redact tool in the Screenshot Editor.
Can I blur many photos at once?
Yes. Drop several photos together. The blur type, strength, mode and any areas you drew on the first photo are applied to every photo, and you download a ZIP. In the AI modes, each photo gets its own cut-out, so the subject is found separately in every image.
Why do the edges of my blurred photo not turn dark?
Many simple blur tools fade the edges to black or transparent because there are no pixels beyond the border. This tool extends the edge pixels outward before blurring, so the borders stay the right colour.
Does blurring an image change its format or size?
The output keeps the same pixel dimensions. By default JPG, PNG and WebP keep their format and other types are saved as PNG, and Save as lets you pick JPG, PNG or WebP instead. JPG and WebP are saved at 92 percent quality.
Can I unblur or sharpen a blurry photo with this tool?
No, this tool only adds blur. Removing blur is a different problem. For small or soft images, the AI Image Upscaler can make edges look crisper, but it cannot restore detail that was lost.
Are my photos uploaded when I blur them?
No. The blur is applied with the canvas in your browser, and the AI modes run the model on your device too. The files are saved on your device.
