Common questions
Is HEIC to PNG conversion lossless?
The PNG stores the decoded photo without any further loss, so nothing is lost in the conversion step. The HEIC itself was already lossy when the camera saved it, so the PNG cannot add back detail that HEIC compression removed. Resizing does change the pixels, so leave Resize on Original size for an exact copy.
Why is my PNG so much larger than the HEIC file?
HEIC uses lossy compression designed for photos, while PNG is lossless. A 2 MB iPhone photo can easily become a PNG several times that size. Resize to a longest side such as 2048 pixels to cut the size a lot, or convert to JPG or WebP if editing headroom is not needed.
Should I choose PNG or JPG for iPhone photos?
JPG is better for sharing, uploading and storage because the files are small and open everywhere. PNG is better when you will edit the photo repeatedly or need an exact copy of the decoded pixels for design work.
Can I convert HEIF files to PNG too?
Yes. HEIF is the container format and HEIC is the most common variant of it. The uploader accepts both .heic and .heif files.
Are my photos uploaded when converting HEIC to PNG?
No. Decoding and PNG encoding both happen in your browser tab. Only the decoder is downloaded, once.
Can I convert many HEIC files to PNG at once?
Yes. Add all the files, click Convert to PNG, and the results arrive in one ZIP when two or more succeed. Files that fail are marked with an error and skipped.
Does the PNG keep transparency from the HEIC?
Camera photos have no transparent areas, so there is nothing to keep. If a HEIC image does contain an alpha channel, the PNG format can hold it.
Does HEIC to PNG keep the photo's EXIF data?
No. The PNG is a fresh image created from the decoded pixels, so camera details, the date taken and GPS location are not included. If you need them, switch the output to JPG and tick Keep photo metadata.
