Why PNG to ICO Converter

Which ICO sizes to include

An ICO file is a container that holds several images of the same icon at different sizes. The system picks the closest size for each place it shows the icon, so including the right ones avoids blurry scaling. Extra sizes add only a few kilobytes, so when in doubt, include them.

Common questions

How do I convert a PNG to ICO for a favicon?
Upload the PNG, click the Favicon (16, 32, 48) preset, then Build ICO. Rename the file to favicon.ico if needed and place it in your website's root folder. For a full set with PNG sizes, an apple-touch-icon and a manifest, the Favicon Generator makes everything at once.
What sizes should an ICO file contain?
For a website favicon, 16, 32 and 48 pixels cover browser tabs and shortcuts. For a Windows program or shortcut icon, include 16, 24, 32, 48 and 256 so it looks sharp in lists, on the desktop and at high display scaling. Recommended picks a sensible set for both.
Can I convert a JPG or SVG to ICO?
Yes. Any image your browser can open works, including JPG, SVG and WebP, and iPhone HEIC photos are converted first. JPG has no transparency, so the icon keeps whatever background the photo has unless you set a background colour.
Does the ICO converter keep transparency?
Yes. Transparent areas in a PNG, WebP or SVG stay transparent in every size, and the space added around non-square images is transparent too, unless you tick Fill background.
Can I convert several images to ICO at once?
Yes. Drop several images or use Add images. Each one becomes its own .ico with the sizes you selected, and they download together as a ZIP named after the original files.
How do I convert an ICO file back to PNG?
Switch Mode to ICO to PNG and drop the .ico or .cur file. Every size inside it is listed with its dimensions and colour depth, including old 8-bit and 4-bit frames, and you can save any one as PNG or download them all as a ZIP.
Why does my 16x16 icon look blurry?
Detailed logos lose clarity when shrunk to 16 pixels. The size preview shows exactly how it will look. Use a simplified version of your logo, such as just the symbol or one letter, with thick shapes and strong contrast, and reduce the padding so it fills more of the square.
Will the ICO file work on Windows 10 and 11?
Yes. Each size is stored as a PNG inside the ICO, which Windows Vista and later, and all modern browsers, can read. Very old software from the Windows XP era may not display the PNG-based frames.
