JPG to PNG Converter

This JPG to PNG converter turns JPG and JPEG photos into PNG files in your browser, one at a time or hundreds in a batch. Keep PNG and set the options

PNG is preselected under Output format and needs no quality setting. Type a Max width or Max height to scale large photos down, and switch on Make background colour transparent for logos on white.

Why JPG to PNG Converter

Why a PNG made from a JPG is bigger but not sharper

JPG is a lossy format. When a camera or app saves a JPG, it splits the picture into small blocks and simplifies the fine detail that the eye barely notices. That detail is gone from the file for good.

PNG is lossless. It stores every pixel exactly and compresses only by finding repeated patterns, which works well for flat graphics and poorly for photos full of texture and noise. So when you convert a photo from JPG to PNG, the PNG faithfully stores the already simplified pixels, and the file often ends up several times larger.

Converting makes sense when the file will be edited again, when a tool or form only accepts PNG, or when you plan to add transparency later. If you only need a smaller file for the web, WebP or a compressed JPG is a better target.

JPG, PNG and WebP at a glance

All three formats open in current browsers. The right one depends on the content of the image and where it is going.

A simple rule works for most people: photos you share or upload go as JPG, graphics you edit or need with a transparent background go as PNG, and images for your own website go as WebP. Common questions

Does converting JPG to PNG improve image quality?
No. JPG compression removed some detail when the photo was first saved, and changing the format cannot bring it back. What PNG gives you is a copy that will not lose any more quality, however many times you edit and save it.
Is JPG to PNG conversion lossless?
The conversion step is. Every pixel the browser decodes from the JPG is stored in the PNG exactly, with no new compression. The PNG is only as good as the JPG it came from, though, including any blocky artefacts already in it.
Why is my PNG bigger than the JPG?
PNG stores every pixel without lossy compression, while JPG throws away detail to stay small. A photo that was a few hundred KB as a JPG can easily become several MB as a PNG. That is expected and does not mean anything went wrong.
How do I make a JPG background transparent?
Switch on Make background colour transparent, keep the colour at white (or pick the background colour), and press Convert to PNG. With Only the background touching the edges on, white inside the subject is kept. This suits logos and product shots on a plain background. For people or busy scenes, use the Background Remover linked under the settings.
Can I convert many JPGs to PNG at once?
Yes. Drop them all in together and they are converted one after another in your browser. Each row shows the old and new size, a summary shows the total, and Download all saves one converted-png.zip file.
Can I make the PNG smaller while converting from JPG?
Type a value in Max width or Max height, such as 1200. Any photo larger than that is scaled down with its aspect ratio kept, which cuts the PNG size a lot. You can also pick 256, 128 or 64 under PNG colours for a palette PNG, which is often several times smaller.
What happens to EXIF data when a JPG becomes a PNG?
By default it is removed, because the image is redrawn on a canvas that keeps only the pixels. Turn on Keep EXIF data and the camera model, date and GPS location are copied into the PNG, with the orientation tag reset since the pixels are already upright.
Can I export WebP or JPG from the JPG to PNG page instead?
Yes. The Output format row also offers WebP, JPG, GIF, BMP and TIFF, plus AVIF in browsers that can encode it. For JPG, WebP and AVIF a quality slider from 1 to 100 appears, because those formats are lossy.
Are my photos uploaded when converting JPG to PNG?
No. Decoding and encoding both happen in your browser tab using the canvas feature, and no file is sent to a server. Once the page has loaded, the conversion works even if your connection drops.
