How to use
Pick a picture
Drop or paste a photo, including HEIC and TIFF, or choose a blank canvas such as Square 1080 x 1080. Top and bottom text boxes appear straight away.
Write and place the text
Select a layer and type in the Text box. Drag text on the canvas, or use the arrow keys. Set font, size, box width, outline, colours, caps, shadow and background box.
Download or copy
Pick JPG, PNG, WebP or GIF and a width, then press Download meme. Copy image puts a PNG on the clipboard for pasting into a chat or post.
Why Meme Generator
- Classic Impact text with outline, plus nine other fonts including Devanagari.
- Unlimited draggable text boxes and extra image layers.
- Caption bars for text above or below the picture.
- No watermark or sign-up. Images stay in your browser.
Making text readable on any photo
Meme text has to work on light skies and dark shadows in the same picture. That is why the classic look is white letters with a thick black outline: one of the two always contrasts with the background.
- Keep the outline between 6 and 10 percent for bold fonts like Impact. Thin fonts need less.
- Use capitals for short punchlines. Long sentences read more easily in normal case.
- Turn on Background box with 50 to 70 percent opacity for busy photos.
- Leave a margin: keep text away from the very edge, where apps may crop the image.
- For text outside the image, add a caption bar and use black text on white.
Choosing a format for your meme
JPG is the usual choice for photo memes, with the smallest files at quality 80 to 90. PNG keeps flat colours and text edges perfectly crisp, which suits memes made on a blank canvas. WebP is small and sharp and works in most apps today. GIF is limited to 256 colours, so photos may look grainy, but some chat apps expect it.
