Scan to PDF

Scan to PDF turns your phone or laptop camera into a document scanner. Capture pages with the live camera, take photos with your phone's camera app, or upload existing pictures. The tool finds the edges of the paper, straightens the page with perspective correction, and cleans it up with Auto colour, Grayscale or Black and white filters, the last of which removes shadows from uneven light. Drag the corners to fix any crop, rotate pages, reorder them by dragging or with the arrows, then save everything as one PDF on A4, US Letter or pages shaped like the scan. Photos are processed in your browser and never uploaded.

Why Scan to PDF

Getting a clean scan from a photo

Most scan problems come from the photo rather than the software. A few habits make edge detection and filters work first time.

  • Put the page on a darker, plain surface so its edges are clear.
  • Shoot from straight above in even light, and avoid your own shadow over the page.
  • Fill most of the frame with the page but keep all four corners in view.
  • Hold still for a moment before capturing, especially in low light.

Page and file settings

A4 and US Letter fit each scan inside the page with no margin, a small one or a big one, and the orientation can follow each page or be fixed. Same shape as the scan makes each page match the cropped photo.

Common questions

How do I scan a document to PDF with my phone?
Open this page on your phone and press Use camera, or Take photo to use the phone's own camera app at full resolution. Capture each page, check the corners and filter, then press Create PDF. The PDF saves to your phone's downloads.
How does the scanner find the edges of the page?
It looks for the largest bright area in the photo and takes its four outer corners. This works well for white paper on a darker table. On a white desk, or if part of the page is cut off, drag the corner handles yourself.
What is perspective correction in a document scanner?
A photo taken at an angle makes the page look like a trapezoid. Perspective correction maps the four corners you set back onto a flat rectangle, so lines are straight and the page looks as if it was scanned flat.
Which scan filter should I use for receipts and text documents?
Black and white suits printed text and receipts. It uses a threshold that adapts to each area, so shadows and uneven light turn white while the ink stays black, and the pages compress well. Use Auto colour for colour documents and Grayscale for pencil or faint print.
Can I scan several pages into one PDF?
Yes. Every capture or photo becomes a page. Drag pages into order or use the arrow buttons, delete retakes, and Create PDF puts them all in one file in that order.
Why does the camera not start when I try to scan to PDF?
The browser needs permission to use the camera. Allow it when asked, or in the site settings if you blocked it before. If it still fails, use Take photo, which opens your phone's camera app, or upload photos you already have.
Can I upload iPhone HEIC photos to make a scanned PDF?
Yes. HEIC and HEIF photos are decoded in your browser and treated like any JPG. You can also mix JPG, PNG and WebP images in the same document.
Does the scanned PDF have searchable text?
No, each page is saved as an image. To make the text searchable and copyable, run the finished PDF through an OCR tool afterwards.
How big will my scanned PDF be?
It depends on the quality setting and filter. Smaller file limits pages to 1600 pixels on the long side, Balanced to 2200 and High detail to 3200. Black and white pages are saved as lossless images and are usually the smallest. The size is shown after saving.
