Unlock PDF removes the password and the print, copy and edit restrictions from a PDF you own, right in your browser. Drop in one file or several. Each is checked as it arrives, and you see whether it needs a password and what it blocks, such as printing or copying. Files that only carry restrictions unlock in one click. Files that ask for a password when opened need that password once. The same password is used for every file in the batch, which suits a year of bank or card e-statements, and any file with a different password can get its own. Decryption is done by qpdf running as WebAssembly, so the result is a clean, unencrypted copy. It cannot recover a forgotten password, and your files never leave your device.

How to use

Add the locked PDFs

Drop one or more PDFs, up to 100 MB each. Every file is listed with its size and a note saying whether it needs a password and which actions it blocks.

Enter the current password

If any file needs a password to open, type it in the Current password field and use the eye button to check it. A file with a different password can get its own in the box under its name.

Unlock and download

Press Unlock & download. One file downloads with an -unlocked suffix, and several arrive together in a ZIP, with a download button beside each. Any file that rejects the password is marked so you can try again.

Why Unlock PDF

Restrictions-only PDFs vs password-to-open PDFs

PDFs can be locked in two different ways, and the tool tells you which one you have as soon as a file is added. The difference decides whether you need a password.

Restriction flags are listed next to each file, for example printing, editing or copying text and images, so you know what will change after unlocking.

Unlocking bank statements and e-statements

Banks, card issuers and some government services send statements as password-protected PDFs. The password is not a secret kept from you. It is usually built from details the sender already holds, and the email that comes with the file explains the format, often part of your name combined with your date of birth or a customer ID.

If a statement will not open with the password you expect, contact the sender. This tool cannot get around the password.

  • Read the email that came with the PDF for the exact format and letter case.
  • Try the password on one file first, then drop in the rest of the statements and unlock them together.
  • Keep the unlocked copies somewhere private, because anyone with the file can now read it.
  • To share a statement with an accountant, convert it with PDF to Excel, or lock it again with Password Protect PDF.

Common questions

What exactly does unlocking remove from a PDF?
It removes the encryption layer entirely: the open password, the owner restrictions, and the flags that block printing, copying and editing. The tool decrypts your file with qpdf running as WebAssembly and writes a clean, unencrypted copy. The visible content stays exactly as it was.
Can this tool remove the password prompt that appears before a PDF opens?
Yes, as long as you know the password. A prompt at open time means the content is encrypted with a user password, so the tool asks for it. Enter the password the file opens with and you get a copy that never asks again.
Can I unlock a PDF if I forgot the password?
No. This tool needs the password for any file that asks for one when opened, and it does not guess or crack passwords. For bank and card statements, the email that came with the file usually explains the password format, and the sender can reissue the document.
Can I unlock several bank statement PDFs at once?
Yes. Drop them all in, type the shared password once and press Unlock all & download. If one statement uses a different password, type it in the box under that file. The unlocked copies come back in one ZIP, each also has its own download button, and any file that did not accept its password is flagged.
Is it legal to unlock a PDF I didn't create?
That depends on your rights to the file, not on who made it. Files you own, or manage for a client with permission, are fine. Stripping protection from ebooks, paid reports or anything you licensed rather than own is not, which is why the page shows a warning above the upload area.
Does the PDF unlocking happen on a server?
No. The whole operation runs in your browser using qpdf compiled to WebAssembly. The file and any password you type stay in memory on your own device, and nothing is sent, logged or stored.
How is unlocking restrictions different from decrypting content?
Restrictions are permission flags for printing, copying and editing. Readers enforce them only because the PDF standard asks them to, so they can be removed without a password. An open password actually encrypts the content, which is why the correct password is needed for those files.
Can I unlock PDF files online free here without an account?
Yes. There is no sign-up, no watermark on the output and no daily limit. The only boundary is the 100 MB size cap per file.
What happens to bookmarks and form fields after the unlock?
qpdf removes the encryption without rebuilding the document, so bookmarks, links, form fields and metadata carry over. Still, open the output and check it before you delete the original.
