About WCAG & Accessibility

The WCAG and Accessibility category has 11 tools for checking a website against the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines. The Website Accessibility Scanner crawls a whole site and reports issues with fix code, and the WCAG Accessibility Checker tests one page or pasted HTML. The Color Contrast Checker tests text and background pairs against AA and AAA. The WCAG Compliance Checklist covers WCAG 2.0, 2.1 and 2.2. The ADA Website Compliance Checklist covers ADA Title III, the AODA Compliance Checklist covers Ontario, and the ADA Title II Compliance Checker covers US state and local governments. The VPAT Generator builds an Accessibility Conformance Report in the VPAT 2.5 layout, and the Accessibility Statement Generator writes a statement in the W3C format. The Color Blindness Simulator and Accessible Color Palette Generator help you choose colors that work for more people. These tools suit developers, designers, agencies and public sector teams. Automated checks catch many issues but not all, so pair them with manual testing.

Common questions

Can an automated scanner make my site fully WCAG compliant?

No. Automated tools catch many common problems, such as missing alt text, low contrast and missing form labels, but many success criteria need a person to judge. Use the scanners to find and fix the clear issues, then test with a keyboard and a screen reader.

What is the difference between the Website Accessibility Scanner and the WCAG Accessibility Checker?

The Website Accessibility Scanner crawls your whole site and builds a full report you can export as PDF, XLSX or CSV. The WCAG Accessibility Checker tests one URL or a block of pasted HTML against 70 automated rules. Use the checker for quick tests and the scanner for a full audit.

What contrast ratio do I need for WCAG AA?

Normal text needs at least 4.5:1 and large text needs 3:1 for level AA. Level AAA raises this to 7:1 and 4.5:1. The Color Contrast Checker shows the ratio and suggests the nearest shade that passes.

Who has to follow ADA Title II?

ADA Title II covers US state and local government bodies, including public schools, colleges and transit agencies. The DOJ rule sets WCAG 2.1 AA as the standard, with deadlines based on population size. The ADA Title II Compliance Checker helps you find your date and track a readiness checklist.

What is a VPAT?

A VPAT is a template that vendors fill in to show how a product meets accessibility standards. The finished document is called an Accessibility Conformance Report. The VPAT Generator lets you rate each WCAG 2.0, 2.1 or 2.2 criterion with remarks, add Section 508 tables, and export Word or HTML.

Are these checklists legal advice?

No. The checklists explain the rules in plain English and help you track progress, but they do not replace advice from a lawyer who knows your situation.
